One Movement Copper Box Festival
Client: East London Business Alliance

One Movement Copper Box Festival was a test event at the Copper Box, one of the brand new venues in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. East London Business Alliance produced a full day of activity, on 21 April 2012, for young people from the Olympic boroughs to come and experience a range of sports and physical activity and test out the new venue that was used for Handball during the Games.

East London Dance delivered a back-to-back programme of dance workshops including street dance, Bollywood and contemporary. The dance teachers were joined by our youth b-boy group, The Firm, who worked as peer mentors and showed off a few of their moves to inspire the other young people.

“Your dance leaders were inspirational and I could see lots of young people having an amazing time (and very few leaving the dance area to try the other sports!).”
Hazel Durrant, Programme Manager Culture, East London Business Alliance

We build long-term partnerships with schools across east London supporting the delivery of high-quality dance both in curriculum and out of school hours.

We offer curriculum enhancement at all Key Stages, across the three interrelated processes of performing, composing and appreciating. We design tailored projects that enable children and young people to experience dance as an art form and that also make links across the curriculum. One of our strengths is enabling teacher-artist partnerships to flourish so professional development is embedded through the projects.

East London Dance is proud to be working in partnership with schools and settings on their Artsmark Award journey, through provision of high quality dance opportunities. Artsmark is Arts Council England’s flagship programme which enables schools to evaluate, strengthen and celebrate their arts and cultural provision. By supporting Artsmark settings, we’re helping put the arts at the heart of education, inspiring young people to create, experience and participate in high quality arts and culture.

Dance is an excellent way of building pupils’ confidence, aspiration and self-esteem and East London Dance can work with schools to design projects utilising the Pupil Premium, to help raise the achievement of disadvantaged pupils.

Dance is also great for getting pupils active and healthy and East London Dance can work with primary schools to develop PE and Sport Premium projects.

East London Dance also offers INSET training and professional development for teachers.

GCSE Dance Workshops
Client: Central Foundation School for Girls

Central Foundation School for Girls in Tower Hamlets wanted to bring in professional dance teachers to work with GCSE Dance students on the use of choreographic devices and fusion of dance styles.

East London Dance provided a bespoke 8-week programme of technique and choreographic workshops for the GCSE students. We designed 1.5 hour sessions that were delivered twice a week during school time by Alesandra Seutin with an assistant artist. Alesandra was able to combine her knowledge of the GCSE Dance curriculum with her professional experience and unique aesthetic, Afro-Eclectic, which fuses contemporary, African and street styles.

Holocaust Memorial Day Dance Commission
Client: Holocaust Memorial Day Trust

Holocaust Memorial Day Trust wanted to incorporate dance and the arts to their annual Holocaust commemorations to accompany an exhibition they were touring to schools.

East London Dance were commissioned to deliver a new 10-minute performance. Identifying that we would need to create an abstract, educational and inspiring piece of choreography that could sit in this sensitive cultural event we selected choreographer Tony Adigun (Avant Garde Dance) to create a short piece with Avant Garde Youth Company (14-19 years old) in response to the theme ‘Speak up, Speak Out’. The piece was performed as part of an exhibition for secondary school pupils.

“Working with East London Dance was great. The dance performance was really well received by the young people in the audience and many of them wrote about the dance when reflecting on the UK HMD event. Working with East London Dance really shaped our arts programme and has left a strong legacy for the programme today”
James Hurst, Director of Operations at HMDT

Dancing Voices
Client: Barrowland Ballet

In 2012, East London Dance commissioned Natasha Gilmore to choreograph a major new work featuring hundreds of older dancers for the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre.

Natasha had recently established her dance company, Barrowland Ballet, in Glasgow and was keen to develop a major older people’s project in the city. East London Dance worked as project consultants for Barrowland Ballet to re-produce Dancing Voices in Glasgow drawing on our delivery model and learning from what we were doing in London, and training up her team of producers to understand how to produce large-scale participatory performance projects.

“I have worked as a choreographer with many different dance organisations across the country, but none that match East London Dance’s ability to produce such inspirational work with communities. It has been great for my team to learn from their approach and strategies to deliver such ambitious work with non-professional dancers.”
